I read that using coffee as a rinse gives a nice shine to redheads and brunettes. I’m a redhead by the way. When I was younger, my hair was the color of a new copper penny. Now, in my 30s, it has faded to a dull red-brown. So I had already decided to dye my hair brown because I think brown hair is very pretty. When I read that you could also use coffee as a dye, I thought, what the hell, I was going to dye it brown anyway.

But as I was reading about the coffee dye, I learned of the redhead dye too. So I decided to try to dye the hair at the crown of my head red. And then finish off with a honey/olive oil mask to try to get the frizz down.

Step 1: Dye hair with coffee to become a brunette.

  Recipe from the internet:
These rinses are used to wash your hair. Re-use the same liquid at least 15 times. On the last rinse, leave it on for 15 minutes while you make a soufflé or something, then rinse with clear water, you know what kind!
Blonde: 1 T lemon juice in 1 gallon warm water.
Brunette: Rinse hair with a strong black tea or coffee.
Red: Use a strong rosehip or clove tea or coffee.
Covering Gray: Simmer 1/2 C dried sage in 2 C water for 30 minutes, then steep for several hours. Apply to your hair and leave on ‘til dried. Repeat every week, until you are happy with result, and then use every month to maintain the color.
Step 2: Dye the hair at the top of my head red.

  Recipe from the internet:
For red highlights or to enhance red hair :
1/2 cup of beet juice mixed with 1/2 cup of carrot juice . Mix together, pour on damp hair, and let sit for one hour before washing out. If you spend that hour sitting in direct sunlight, the effects will be even more dramatic.

Step 3: Finish with a honey/olive oil mask.

  Recipe from the internet:
Honey Hair Conditioning Treatment. This great formula combines the benefits of honey and olive oil for lustrous, silky, healthy hair and scalp. Simply combine 1/2 cup honey and 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup olive oil (depending on the dryness of your hair and scalp). Saturate hair and scalp with this conditioner, then put on a shower cap and allow the conditioner to remain for 30 minutes before you shampoo and rinse as usual.

Note: I used 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.

Results: I am not a brunette. Matt thinks that my coffee wasn’t strong enough. Though my hair is darker, I am still quite noticeably a redhead. And the beet/carrot juice mixture did not make me an extreme redhead. Finally, the honey/olive oil mix left my hair very oily and the ends are still slightly frizzy.

However, I like the slightly darker color underneath and the slightly lighter color on top. And I know when I wash my hair tomorrow, it will be less oily and then I can better tell if my hair is less frizzy. Also, I liked the honey/olive oil treatment much better than the mayonnaise mainly due to the smell. The mayonnaise smelled gross and the honey smelled divine.

Tomorrow is the final hair experiment: wash with beer for extra body.
